Created in 2008, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is a unique EU initiative that boosts innovation and entrepreneurship across Europe. Within this scope, the Business Idea Competition 2018 (BIC'2018) seeks at supporting idea holders aiming at embracing the venture path and wanting more training in entrepreneurship.
It is jointly organised by EIT HealthEIT RawMaterials and EIT Food  to improve cross-sectoral innovation performance, with a special focus on - but not limitied to -  EIT RIS eligible countries, along the following thematic areas: 1) Food 2)   Health 3) Raw Materials (excluding: food, oil, wood).

How does it work?

The BIC'2018  offers cash worth of EUR 1 000 of scholarship for attending the training bootcampsfollowed by individual coaching to finalise the complete business plan for final competition in which the best business ideas will be awared up to EUR 10 000 of grant  for each sector.

  1. If you have great business idea, please apply to our online form.
  2. If your application is selected, you/your team will participate in a 2-day Business Planning Bootcamp,which will provide you with a unique cross-industry environment. The primary focus is on building a quantitative business model (revenues, financial planning etc.) You will also learn about how to build a business: how to build a team, business processes, organizational design etc.
  3. After the Bootcamp, you will participate to the next phase of the competition by getting further coaching/ mentoring after which you can finalise and submit your complete business plan.
  4. The best teams with the best business plan will  compete at the Joint Pitch Finals for a  prize of up to EUR 10 000 each.

The participants will be shortlisted to participate to the bootcamps based on their entrepreneurial motivation and the impact of their business ideas to the sector.

What is the timeline?

  • Deadline for submitting business ideas: 31 March  2018 at 17:00 CET.

  • Selection of ideas and invitation of the bootcamps: April 2018.

  • Bootcamps for the idea laureates: May to June 2018 (see the Terms & Conditions for each Bootcamp)
  • Mentoring and development of selected business plans: June to September 2018.
  • Deadline for submitting business plans: different Deadlines (see Terms and Conditions of each sector).
  • Final Ceremony and awards: November 2018 (exact date to be defined)

Where are the bootcamps?

There will be different bootcamps. You will be assigned a bootcamp according to your thematic areas and location.
The participants to the bootcamps will be selected based on the strength of their business idea, the impact to the sector and their growth potential. They will receive a travel scholarship worth of EUR 1 000 which will be paid upon the successful completion of the attended bootcamp.

What is the funding support?

  • A lump sum of EUR 1 000 as scholarship will be paid to participants as travel reimbursement to attend the allocated bootcamp.
  • A second lump sum of EUR 1 000 will be paid to those teams/individuals whose business plan is selected and have participated the Joint Pitch Finals.
  • Up to EUR 10 000  per sector will be awarded to the best pitches of the Joint Pitch Final. The ranking of the pitched will be done by a Jury. The amount for the second and third prizes varies according to the sector  (please check the Terms & Conditions of each sector for the attribution of different prize categories).

 

Who should apply?

We are looking for individuals or teams of individuals and very early stage start-ups that have innovative business ideas in one of the three sectors above mentioned: Food, Health and Raw Materials value chain.
The BIC'2018 is open to all citizens of the European Union Member States and the associated countries
For Food and Health, ONLY citizens or residents of so called  Regional Innovation Scheme (RIS) eligible countries can apply.
